Music Makers Weekend 2016

December 16-18 at the Desert Rose Baha’i Institute in Eloy, Arizona.

Last year was a great start. This year we’re going for even better!

Our singer-songwriter CHEF Jim Rust is returning to feed us well!

We’ll have experienced presenters on our key skills (songwriting, song selection, and performance)

AND this year, we have a THEME: “Connecting with the Cause”

So our group discussion will focus on “Making Music with Purpose!”

We will guide our discussions along the path of staying connected to Baha’i Principles and using our craft to further God’s Cause (the unification of all humankind!)

Our preliminary planning has already gotten me excited about how this year will be different and overjoyed that so much will remain the same! (Song circle on Friday night and  Public Showcase Performances on Saturday evening!)

So don’t delay!  Get your registration in!  Here’s the link:

I’m looking forward to seeing you!

DECEMBER 18 – 20 – It’s a GO!!

We have reserved our gathering place – The Desert Rose Baha’i Institute in Eloy Arizona.  DECEMBER 18-20 (Friday – Sunday), we will have a weekend together sharing our musical crafts – songwriting, performing, recording, promotion, and more.

drbi EHHJust think of it! When the rest of the country is in the throws of Winter, we’ll be enjoying the mild winter of the Arizona Desert! (well, for 3 days anyway)

The registration site is not yet ready, but soon will be. We will have a link to here as soon as it is available.  As a heads up, plan on these costs:

Conference Fee includes meals: $150
PLUS Lodging – Your choice: $17/night in the dormitory “bunk house”, or for $45/night you might rent one of  DRBI’s motel-like rooms (first come). There are also other on-site choices at higher cost. And there are a variety of local hotels.

I’m still working on the agenda, but rest assured, Friday night will be our SONG CIRCLE night and on Saturday night, we will perform a PUBLIC SHOW!  In between, well, that’s what I’m working on and I’ll let you know as soon as it’s final.

I think you’re going to enjoy Desert Rose in the winter. It’s a completely different environment than that to which you may be accustomed.  And if you have time after our weekend or before, there’s plenty cool things to see in Arizona.

But most importantly, we get to see each other!

On the PERFORMANCE & PRODUCTION side of the house we will have veteran performer Alan James tuning up your Stage Presence and Jeff Bohnhoff, producer and recording engineer at Mystic Fig Studio, teaching us about Recording and Production.  Darrell Rodgers (me) will offer a session too, on Tools and Tips for the DIY musician

Our great friend Chuck Thrapp is coming to host SONG-CIRCLES in the Lodge giving everyone a chance to share new material in an intimate and friendly environment.

SING-ALONG Leaders! A Special Workshop is coming for YOU! This year’s Music Industry Weekend will include a special session designed to help you become a sing-along leader in your community AND teach you to TEACH OTHERS how to do so as well. This “Train the Trainers” course will be conducted by several MIW alumni with real skills in the process of awakening the “inner songbird” in all our friends. Rana Chang, and Jean T. Quinn,  both highly accomplished group-sing leaders themselves, will share their techniques for energizing the singers in your community.

And for those singers with a spirit of adventure, you will be more than welcome to lend your voices in collaborations with other musicians during the weekend.
This will certainly expand the HARMONY of this wonderful weekend! Come Join The Fun!

We are almost ready for Music Industry Weekend 2014 – At Bosch Baha’i School again!   November 13-16.

I have had about a dozen people tell me they are coming this year already, and that’s a GOOD THING.  We need to have at least 15 REGISTERED by 30 October in order to make this work.

The cost this year will be $222 per person (25% due upon registration). And we are again offering the early arrival option on Wednesday night for an additional $60. This is for folks who want to spend ALL DAY Jamming before the official start. (You may have to CALL Bosch (831-423-3387) to take advantage of this)

And for folks local to Bosch, there’s a day-student commuter option.

The detailed agenda for all of this will be posted soon. In the meantime, TELL your musician friends to join us!

SONGWRITERS!  You don’t want to miss this year’s event. There will be several sessions perfect for YOU!  I will announce our Songwriter’s Challenge song title on 13 October.  We’ll all have 30 days to write a song – to the same title!

We’re going to have Russ Salton and his mobile recording studio again!  Russ is a skilled producer!

And this year, to broaden our horizon, we are incorporating a special workshop for folks wanting to learn how to become SING ALONG LEADERS!  Yes! Rana Chang and Jean T. Quinn, two of our illustrious alumni, will be conducting workshops on this path to musical service in your community. And as a sing-along session participant, you will have the opportunity to perform with all of the other musicians and lend some harmony voices to the show!

Spread the Word!  Let’s have another fantastic Weekend together!

MIRACLE! – We are BACK ON – for November 13-16, 2014

I just finished talking with Dr. Nancy Norton, Administrator of Bosch Baha’i School. With the blessing of  Missy Martin – the Bahá’í National Center’s Director of the Office of Education and Schools  – we have been offered a time slot as a “Baha’i-Inspired Rental” at Bosch Baha’i School in November from the 13th (Thursday) through the 16th (Sunday).

No one had reserved Bosch for that weekend giving us the opportunity to use Martha Root Hall, which is essential to our program.

While the school will still provide on-line registration and hospitality at the normal rates, we must do all of our own publicity and promotion.  If no other larger group seeks to use MRH that weekend, we will be fine.  If we are small in number however, we run the risk of losing this opportunity all together.

I will work with Bosch to get a registration link for our own website (here) as soon as I can.

Work has already begun on formulating a program. You can expect a SONGWRITING CHALLENGE to be issue on October 13th (giving us all one month to write a new song, each with the same title).

Please email me or comment regarding topics you would like to see in a workshop.

I want to thank those folks who took the time to write or call the National Office urging them to continue the program. It alerted Missy Martin to a miscommunication about our event and she contacted me to offer this alternative. Thank you Missy!  Special thanks to Sharon Lark for her long letter!
