July Update – Agenda Shaping Up!

Things are shaping up for another fantastic Music Industry Weekend October 21 – 24, 2010 at the beautiful Bosch Baha’i School in Santa Cruz, CA.

We have several confirmed workshops on the agenda.  Back by popular demand is the Front Porch Strummin’ Song Circles lead by Chuck Thrapp.  We have Russ Salton again bringing his portable recording equipment and he’ll be helping participants record some tracks and learn how to do it themselves in the process.  The highly skilled and talented Jeff Bohnhoff will be presenting a new workshop this year called “The Art of Mixing” that will be valuable to any DIY artists hoping to improve their recordings.  Another new feature this year will be a presentation on “Basic DIY Videos – economic yet effective video promotion” by none other than rising star (and soon-to-be-graduate of Berklee College of Music) Robert Gillies

We have other features “in the works” that I will announce as plans solidify.  I’d like to hear from anyone planning to attend who has a decent quality video camera and perhaps even some good video editing software on a laptop. (That should give you a hint about what we’re trying to set up!)  I’ve been doing this a long time now and this is already looking like one of our best line-ups yet.

And in response to a spontaneous suggestion last year from Alan James and others, we are getting an optional “extra day”.  Anyone who wants some great jam time before the session officially starts is welcome to register for early arrival Wednesday night (for a small additional fee).  Jordan Rager himself (Deputy Director of Bosch) will be our host that evening, assigning accommodations as we arrive.  He’ll open up Martha Root Hall on Thursday morning for folks who just want to get to know one another musically and start building musical collaborations.

NEWS gleaned from around the country – and beyond:

Jarome and Felisha Matthew have just adopted Evan Binh Minh (of Viet Nam) as their infant son.  They have secured Canadian citizenship for Evan and will be bringing him home to Canada soon – but only long enough to pack up everything and move to China!  Yes, the matthew family are relocating to China.  Jarome, I will miss you this fall, but i’ve never seen you looking happier than you do in those blog photos.

Kelly Snook has flown over to jolly-olde England and is doing some production work for Imogen Heap.  She’s also mixing Devon Gundry’s “refrenergy” record.  (ya! Devon!)

Devon got married this year to the lovely and talented Golriz Lucina and their wedding video is a delight! http://www.vimeo.com/12787482

Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff have produced a new CD of their parody songs called “Grated Hits”.  They’ve been traveling the world of FILK music and been honored for their music in far away places – like Ontario.

Jon and Auntieclaire Rezin became proud parents of daughter Lua.  A gorgeous child (looks like her mom, obviously).  They recently took a family road Trip with the JB Eckl family up the coast to Oregon and Washington performing a number of house concerts promoting JB’s soon-to-be-released album which Jon is helping JB produce.  JB took a detour during his Northwest passage, for a trip to New Orleans and a charity gig with Imogen Heap.

Neshia Farhangi has been busy lately.  As if movies and radio shows weren’t enough, she recently performed some of her own songs at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.  She’s working on a CD.  We already knew that girl could sing!

Singer-Songwriter, Life Coach, and Author, Laura Harley, has a brand new production in the works.  A BABY!  She and Teddy are expecting their first child. (due by the way, pretty close to Music Industry Weekend this year)  Congratulations to both of you.

Michael Eissinger of RadioNUR is on his way to becoming a PhD. He’s commuting quite a distance to get it done too.  In case you haven’t been to the website recently, although it has lost it’s slick layout (hacked to death), there are some cool new features.  You can stream the program right from the page now.  Michael writes “I just plug my BlackBerry into the Aux jack of my car stereo, tune radioNUR in through radioBee, and head on down the road.  As long as I have cell phone service, I have radioNUR. If your mobile phone contract supports unlimited data and internet access, you can do the same.”  Now that’s pretty cool.

Van Gilmer, after hosting a successful 4th Annual Choral music festival” at the Baha’i House of Worship in Wilmette IL (where Van is Musical Director), just scooted off to India and other exotic places with Tom Price and the “Voices of Baha” tour.  I have been enjoying the photos posted on Facebook by our many friends on the tour.

Well, that’s all I have time for this time around.  If you have news to share, drop me a line.  And be sure to spread the word about Music Industry Weekend at Bosch Baha’i School, October 21-24, 2010.
